Hydrogen Energy

Hydrogen power plants with CCS, like those that is jointly developing in Abu Dhabi and California, will allow continued use of hydrocarbons in power stations while minimizing their CO2 footprint. This new generation of power stations use feedstocks such as coal, petroleum coke or natural gas, separating out around 90% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the fuel. This CO2, is then stored deep underground and may be used for enhancing oil recovery. During the separation of the CO2 from the feedstock, hydrogen is also created. It's this highly calorific and now almost CO2-free fuel that is combusted to generate low-carbon power for the grid.
